It’s Wednesday, and starting today, that means we’re going to mix things up here at Sweet Finds. On Wednesdays, instead of delivering up the usual gift list and wish list recommendations, we’ll serve up helpful tidbits to make shopping a little easier, cheaper, and more fun.
To kick things off, I wanted to point you to one of my new favorite shopping sites: Rue La La. Each day, the Web site features private boutique sales for different luxury brands. Many of the items for sale are clothing, but a good chunk are jewelry, watches, luggage, home items, top-of-the-line kitchen gear, bedding, wine, and even cruises and hotel stays.
“Sale” isn’t really a strong enough word to describe the discounts available through Rue La La. We’re talking a $149 French Connection dress for $59. We’re talking $450 Fratelli Rossetti pumps for $179. We’re talking different designer brands every day, and we’re talking the ability to wear luxury clothes or give luxury gifts without a luxury budget. Among the brands featured on Rue La La later this week: Victorinox, Robert Craig Winery, Madame Alexander, STEVEN by Steve Madden, and my husband’s favorite Original Penguin for men. Maybe money can’t buy you love, but happiness and fabulous stuff? Yeah, a little.
The catch is that new boutiques open each day at 11 a.m. and are only open for two days. And honestly, stuff goes quickly. I sometimes wonder if they have just a couple of item available. (On the upside, you can sign up for email reminders, which arrive right around 11 a.m. each day.)
At $9.95, shipping’s a bit on the pricey side. But that’s a flat rate. And unlike other high-end discount sites like Bluefly.com, return shipping is always free at Rue La La.
Part of Rue La La’s luxury appeal, I suppose, is that it’s by-invitation-only, but that’s really about as by-invitation-only as Gmail was in its early days. Since I’m a member, consider this an invitation: Just click on this link, fill out the form, and you’re in. Then, you can invite friends, and if they make purchases, you get a $10 credit toward your purchases on Rue La La, canceling out the cost of shipping.
